Chapter Eight

Anais fumbled with the keys to her store and tried unsuccessfully to stifle a yawn. Kyle had some serious stamina. She couldn’t believe he planned on going on a jog this morning after the workout he’d put her through last night. He’d awakened her early, giving them the chance to go at it like rabbits again. Her legs were still shaky. Afterward, she had quickly prepared breakfast for them. There was something so homey and settling about sharing their morning routine with one another. She couldn’t help but wish again that he was the marrying kind. The thought had brought on such a strong pang of melancholia that she knew she couldn’t sleep with him again. She didn’t want to fall for him. It would be the height of stupidity.

She found the right key and unlocked the door.

“Well, if it isn’t my Annie.”

Stiffening, Anais turned to see Leon strolling down the sidewalk. He grinned at her and she wondered if it were possible for him to have fewer teeth than the last time she’d seen him. She resisted the urge to correct him and tell him that the name she had given him was Anna.

“Do you work here?”

She so didn’t want to answer that question. She didn’t want to see him ever again and she definitely did not want him frequenting her store. As she pondered a believable lie, Leon grew impatient. “What’s the matter with you? Don’t you remember me?” He moved closer. “Say, you still got that boyfriend or are you free and single? Because if you are, the two of us could-”

“Yes, I remember you, Leon. And, yes, I still have a boyfriend.”

Leon cast his eyes around the empty street. It was early in the morning, too early for much traffic. He wet his lips. “Well, I won’t tell if you don’t.”

Anais couldn’t stop the look of disgust that crossed her face.

“You think you’re too good for me, don’t you?” He gripped her wrist tightly. “Listen, bitch-”

“No, you listen, you two-toothed psycho,” Anais finally snapped, because really, she’d been more patient with him despite the fact that he had no claim to her time or her attention, “this has gone on long enough.” If he were a friend, she wouldn’t put up with this abuse and she certainly saw no reason to accept it from a stranger. She yanked at her wrist. “Let me go,” she demanded through clenched teeth.

“What you gonna do if I don’t?” he asked leaning closer and letting her know that he saw no reason to wait until noon for cocktails. Or straight whiskey for that matter.

She stomped on his foot, thankful that today she’d worn shoes with a three inch spiked heel. As he howled, she twisted her foot to really grind in the heel. While he was busy cursing, she snatched her wrist out of his hold.

“Shit. Why you evil little-”

Leon was reaching for her again when a deep voice intervened. “Keep your hands off my girlfriend or tomorrow you’re going to be at the bar reminiscing about what it was like to chew your food.
